Arcata Main Street’s 22nd Annual Oyster Festival

When:

June 16, 2012
Join us for a day of food, fun, music and frolic…
On the Arcata Plaza

Arcata Main Street’s Oyster Festival has become a tradition for local restaurateurs, executive chefs, and caterers to show off their culinary skills by preparing oysters in every imaginable way.

More than 70% of the fresh oysters consumed in California are grown in 450 acres of Arcata Bay. June is a peak month for oyster harvests in Humboldt County. These oysters are now farmed using long-lines or “rack & bag” methods in the Arcata Bay and no harmful dredging of the bay is necessary for their capture.

Try them roasted, barbecued, fried, on a pizza, in a secret sauce or just plain raw with a hint of garlic and lime! However your taste buds desire this oceanic delicacy, you are sure to find it on the Arcata Plaza.

With imagination and flair, one can eat away the entire day. The coals glow hot from early morning ’til the last oyster has been shucked.

Crowds throughout the day top 18,000, keeping local food vendors more than busy. Most festival vendors are chefs from Humboldt County’s most appreciated restaurants. Each year festival chefs compete in the annual oyster tasting competition to claim the auspicious award of ‘Best Oyster of the Festival’.

Parking & Shuttles
Don’t want to park in Downtown Arcata? Use our park and ride spots! In our continuing efforts to provide convenience to our patrons and alleviate negative impacts, the festival will be providing off-site parking and free shuttle bus service for the event.

Parking Lots are available at:
Arcata High School
HSU at 14th and Union
Samoa Boulevard 2 blocks west of K Street

Shuttle busses will run every 10-15 minutes from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 pm

Good afternoon,

Arcata Main Street’s 22nd Annual Oyster Festival will take place on Saturday, June 16, 2012. This annual summer tradition on the Arcata Plaza has grown into a successful festival model by demonstrating how an area can capitalize on its natural resources without relinquishing its unique charms.

It was estimated that over 18,000 people attended the 2011 Oyster Festival and dined on oysters prepared by local culinary talent, enjoyed local microbrews, drank fine wine, danced to great music, and enjoyed a kid friendly area.

Through the success of this event and exposure created, Arcata was named the Oyster Capital of California as well as named one of the top 10 food festivals in the world by Away.com. The Oyster Fest attracts throngs of gourmet food lovers to downtown’s historic Arcata Plaza, one of the few last remaining town squares in California. June marks the peak of the oyster season in Humboldt County, where more than 70 percent of the fresh oysters consumed in the state are grown.

Be sure to claim your spot early. We have attached the 2012 Application for Non-Oyster/Kids Area Vendors. Application deadline is Monday, April 16, 2012.

We look forward to your participation in the 2012 Oyster Festival!!!!
